Sediment pre-filters (sometimes called "whole house filters") are often blue or clear in color and consist of a plastic housing with an inlet and an outlet. These filter housings generally hold a sediment filter cartridge that traps solids and removes them from your water. While the UF system alone can filter most water, there are certain circumstances where the sediment is too much for even the strongest filtration systems on their own.

Those that get their water supply from a well tend to have much more sediment in their water than others. This also applies to those who live in older houses or get their water through an old municipal system, as the steel pipes in older buildings have very high levels of sediment. When the sediment levels are too high to be filtered problems can arise due to the strain the sediment puts on water filters.
